Seneca Caverns

An "Earth Crack" Geological Wonder

Unlike typical limestone caves carved out slowly by acidic groundwater, Seneca Caverns is a unique geological phenomenon known as an "earth crack" cave. Formed by tectonic forces and seismic shifts in the bedrock, the limestone split apart, creating deep vertical fissures, towering stone walls, and large subterranean chambers.

The Discovery Story (1872)

The cave was discovered entirely by accident in June 1872. Two local boys, Don Smith and Bill White, were hunting on the property when their dog, a hound named "Trick," chased a rabbit into a brush-covered hole in the ground. While attempting to rescue their dog, the boys fell through the brush, landing on the first level of the cave system. Hearing their dog's barking from below, they realized the cave extended far deeper into the earth.

The Ole Mist'ry River

At the cavern's lowest level—110 feet below the surface—lies the "Ole Mist'ry River." This deep, slow-moving underground stream is part of the vast regional water table. Because it is directly connected to the local aquifer, the river's water levels rise and fall naturally based on seasonal rainfall, sometimes completely flooding the lowest levels during wet spring months and receding in the dry autumn.
